Back Pain Relief Overview

Back pain is a common issue that affects individuals across all ages and can often be a symptom of various serious conditions. Primarily resulting from age-related degeneration of the discs, back pain diagnosis can range from mild Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) cases to severe stages of Herniated Discs (HNP) or even Spinal Stenosis.

Treatment Options

Available treatments range from pain management injections and physical therapy to orthopedic surgeries. However, acupuncture offers a non-invasive alternative that can provide rapid relief with minimal side effects. Research suggests that acupuncture, especially when combined with physical therapy or chiropractic adjustments, can effectively manage chronic back pain and may serve as a standalone treatment.

According to the Clinical Practice Guidelines from American College of Physicians “clinicians and patients should select non-pharmacologic treatments with acupuncture, exercise, tai chi, manual therapy “ before considering pharmacologic therapy with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants and opioids for the treatment of chronic back pain.

Acupuncture for Back Pain

Acupuncture involves the use of thin needles, which are much thinner than typical medical injection needles. This treatment can also incorporate techniques like electric muscle stimulation, cupping, acupressure, manual therapy, and local infrared therapy. Acupuncture is particularly effective in treating back pain linked to stress, and may even alleviate conditions such as pinched nerves when combined with other therapies.

Use of acupuncture along with electric muscle stimulation allows us to relax the muscle spasms and improve local blood circulation at the lower back helping with pain management and delaying further degeneration of the intervertebral discs.

Physical Therapy for Back Pain

Physical therapy is crucial for about 80% of people who experience low back pain at some point. A comprehensive approach that includes education on body mechanics and an active exercise program can significantly reduce disability and prevent recurrence of pain.

This comprehensive approach to managing back pain emphasizes the importance of a thorough evaluation and tailored treatment plans to address the unique needs of each patient, potentially combining both modern and traditional therapies for optimal outcomes.
